The Beautiful Benefits of Dry Brushing

The skin is your largest organ. And while it is a protective layer, it is so much more than that. Skin is a vital part of our overall health. It aids in digestion, circulation, and waste removal. So many toxins are released through our skin, it is important to keep it healthy and functioning beautifully.

Dry brushing has ancient roots. Historically, it was used by the Japanese, Ancient Greeks, and Native Americans. It has since been adopted by several cultures, especially in the Nordic regions.

So why dry brush? It has so many great benefits and we are excited to tell you all about them!

  1. Soft Skin... You know that exfoliating to remove dead skin cells is important right? But did you know that dry brushing is especially beneficial because you do it before you bathe, which allows your skin to retain its natural oils rather than stripping them with hot water? Yeah, it's great.
  2. Tightening the Skin... Some people notice a reduction in the appearance of cellulite. While there is no scientific study that proves a correlation, the anecdotal evidence is plentiful. Dry brushing improves circulation and it is thought to more evenly distribute the fat cells under the skin. We notice a difference! Try it out for yourself.
  3. Lymphatic System and Circulation Support... Many components of the lymphatic system are just under the skin. Regular dry brushing stimulates blood circulation and those vessels, nodes, and glands help with the body's natural detoxification, which, in turn, can strengthen your immune system.
  4. Clear Skin... By removing dead skin cells, dry brushing allows toxins to be excreted from pores, resulting in clearer, brighter, healthier skin. Dry brushing also more evenly distributes your body's natural oils, which helps the areas of your body that are naturally more oily to not breakout.

Dry Brushing Technique

  • Dry brush before you shower or bathe.
  • Brush towards your heart. Start at the sole of your foot and work your way up in a circular motion. When you get to your heart, work your way in from your fingertips.
  • Using long, smooth strokes, brush arm, legs, and buttocks and lower back in an upward motion. Brush your upper back in a downward motion and finally sweep across your shoulders.

A Few Dry Brushing Tips

  • Use a natural-bristle brush. Some people like them with a long handle to help reach your back.
  • Don't dry brush your face. Enough said.
  • Avoid areas around wounds, skin irritations, or rashes.
  • Keep your dry brush dry.
